| File Description | BZ2 is the compressed file format created with the bzip2 which is a free and high-quality data compressor often found on Unix systems. It's implementation of the Burrows–Wheeler algorithm. Like gzip, it is only a bzip2 only compresses single files and requires an external archiver to archive a collection of files. The filename externsion is therefore something like .tar.bz2. Why called bzip2? bzip2's ancestor bzip used arithmetic coding which has historically been covered by US patents. bzip2 is then developed for patent-free purpose. |

When you double click BZ2 files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected BZ2 file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open BZ2 files on WindowsRight-click on the BZ2 file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the BZ2 file opener. If you decide to always open BZ2 files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open BZ2 files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of BZ2 files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your BZ2 file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default BZ2 file opener app.
