| File Description | GZ files are created using the gzip compression utility which is designed to be a replacement for the patented compress. gzip is commonly used on Unix operating systems for file compression. However, it can also be decompressed on Mac and Windows system. Although gzip file format also supports multiple files compression, gzip is usually used to compress just single files. Generally on Unix-like systems, files are archived into a single TAR file and then compressed with gzip. Therefore, .tar.gz is the most common file extension. These files must first be decompressed, then unarchive using a TAR tool. GZ and ZIP file format uses the same data compression algorithm. But they are different. The ZIP format support compressing a collection of files without an external archiver like TAR, but is not as efficient as GZ because ZIP compresses files individually and can't manipulate redundancy between files. gzip also use .gzip file extension. |

When you double click GZ files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected GZ file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open GZ files on WindowsRight-click on the GZ file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the GZ file opener. If you decide to always open GZ files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open GZ files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of GZ files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your GZ file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default GZ file opener app.
