| RAW File Description | NEF is the raw image format used to capture images with several camera models manufactured by Nikon. NEF files are saved in an uncompressed format and the data are exactly the same as it was captured by the CCD even after they are transferred to a computer. NEF is based on TIFF. The header for the NEF format complies with the standard TIFF header. RAW files that are transferred to the PC contains the image exactly as it was captured by the camera, without loss of quality and without compression. You can adjusted for exposure and white balance by using image software like Adobe Photoshop. |

When you double click NEF files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected NEF file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open NEF files on WindowsRight-click on the NEF file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the NEF file opener. If you decide to always open NEF files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open NEF files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of NEF files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your NEF file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default NEF file opener app.
