| File Description | PNG files are Images stored in the Portable Network Graphic format. PNG is designed to improve upon and replace .GIF format. PNG contains a bitmap of indexed colors employing a lossless data compression. It is patent-free and widely used to save graphics for Web images. The limitations of the GIF format including the maximum 256 colors and patented lossless compression called Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW). PNG was therefore designed to increase color support and to provide a patent-free image format. Plus, PNG images can include an 8-bit transparency channel, which makes the image colors to fade from opaque to transparent. For GIF, it can only be fully opaque or fully transparent. However, GIF is still widely used for simpler images such as graphics or logos with solid color and for animations. PNG is only a single-image format. Other related formats are defined for animation, including .MNG ( Multiple-image Network Graphics) and APNG (Animated Portable Network Graphics). |

When you double click PNG files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected PNG file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open PNG files on WindowsRight-click on the PNG file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the PNG file opener. If you decide to always open PNG files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open PNG files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of PNG files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your PNG file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default PNG file opener app.
