| File Description | One of image file formats that is developed by the Netpbm project. For cross-platform purpose, the images are encoded using a text format. PPM files specify the color of the pixel using a number from 0 to 65536, in addition to the image height, width, and so on. The Portable Pixmap format uses an uncompressed and inefficient format so that it is seldom used for storing large images. Besides PPM, other popular Netpbm file formats include the portable bitmap format (.PBM) and the portable graymap format (.PGM). Sometimes, they are also collectively referred to the portable anymap format (.PNM).

When you double click PPM files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected PPM file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open PPM files on WindowsRight-click on the PPM file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the PPM file opener. If you decide to always open PPM files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open PPM files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of PPM files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your PPM file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default PPM file opener app.
