| File Description | Microsoft Excel is a program used to create spreadsheets that stores data in a grid of rows and columns which are usually calculated to create charts and graphics for financial or statistic purpose. XLS is the file extension of the default format created with Microsoft Excel before version 2007. Since Excel 2007, the Open XML standard is adopted and several new formats are developed: XLSX: The default Excel 2007 workbook format without macros, actually ZIP compressed archive with a directory structure of XML text documents. It replaces the former binary .xls format. Note that XLSX files can also be read with the earlier versions of Excel via Open XML component support. |

When you double click XLSX files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected XLSX file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open XLSX files on WindowsRight-click on the XLSX file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the XLSX file opener. If you decide to always open XLSX files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open XLSX files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of XLSX files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your XLSX file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default XLSX file opener app.
