| File Description | JPEG, pronounced as J-Peg, is the most widely used lossy compression mothed for web graphics and digital photos. It was developed by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) in1992, which was also known as JPEG-1. JPEG supports up to 24-bit color and lossy compression, which is an ideal way to store colorful and good quality of photos with reasonal file size. The JPEG compression ratio is adjustable, which make it well compromise between image quality and file size. However, JPEG commonly perform 10:1 compression with little image quality lost. Many other image file formats are based on JPEG compression. JPEG/EXIF is the most popular image standard used by digital cameras and capture devices. Similarly, JPEG/JFIF is the equivalent of JPEG EXIF for storing and transmitting images on Internet. |

When you double click JPEG files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected JPEG file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open JPEG files on WindowsRight-click on the JPEG file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the JPEG file opener. If you decide to always open JPEG files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open JPEG files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of JPEG files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your JPEG file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default JPEG file opener app.
