| File Description | MKV, short for Matroska Video, is an open-source video container format that supports several types of audio and video codecs and unlimited video, audio, picture and subtitle tracks. It may include .SRT, .SSA, or USF (Universal Subtitle Format) subtitles and VobSub subtitles from DVDs. MKV is popular in the anime fan-subbing community since it supports multiple audio and subtitle tracks in the same file. Matroska derives from the Russian word Matryoshka, which means nesting doll (the popular Russian cylindrical-shaped doll within a doll, also known as a babushka doll). |

When you double click MKV files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected MKV file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open MKV files on WindowsRight-click on the MKV file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the MKV file opener. If you decide to always open MKV files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open MKV files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of MKV files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your MKV file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default MKV file opener app.
