| File Description | RAR is a proprietaryarchive file format developed by a Russian software engineer,Eugene Roshal. It supports high ratio data compression, error recovery, and file spanning. Besides .rar filename extension, .rev, .r00, .r01, .r02 to .r99 are also used. For example, .rar is generally used for the data volume set, while .rev for the recovery volume set. If a RAR-archive is split into many RAR compressed files (a "multi-volume archive"). They will have the extensions .rar, .r00, .r01, .r02 etc. RAR incorporates a proprietary compression algorithm that is now used by many decompression programs, including 7-Zip for its .7Z files. However, WinRAR is the only graphical tool that can write modern RAR files. Compared to other compressors, RAR is typically slower, but it has a moderately better rate of compression. |

When you double click RAR files on computer, the associated program will be launched to open the selected RAR file. But you can change it to any program at your pleasure. a) Select a program to open RAR files on WindowsRight-click on the RAR file and go through 'Open with' > 'Choose default program'. In the pop-up windows, choose a program as the RAR file opener. If you decide to always open RAR files with the program, only check the option 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file'.
b) Select another application to open RAR files on MacFirst Get Info about any one of RAR files by right-clicking or Command-I, and click 'Open with' arrow to choose a program to start your RAR file. Click 'Change All' button to set the selected application as the default RAR file opener app.
